What skills will I learn?

  • Gather information from a variety of sources
  • Process and present information using a variety of techniques 

How will I learn?

A variety of techniques including research projects, seminars, guest speakers, data and cartoon analysis

What should I already have done? (Pre-requisites)

It is an advantage to have read widely and have developed an inquiring mind. It is also important to have achieved competency in English, as this subject involves lots of essay writing and focussed reading. An interest in the past is essential. 

Where does this lead?

NCEA level 2 History. Useful for careers in advertising, TV, radio and other media, law, business, economics, publishing, education, social work, politics, travel, journalism, archaeology, anthropology, psychology, and computer game development. (If you wish to work in this area you will be asked if you have studied history) Also as a prerequisite to enter medical school you are required to have one of the Humanities (History, Art History, Classical Studies, Geography or Social Sciences) A greater appreciation of most types of literature, both fact and fiction, and an understanding of the world we live in.

How is this course assessed?

By achievement standards (and selected unit standards). Internally (I) and Externally (E) assessed.
