Year 9 Music

An introductory “taster” course in which students will learn the science of music, rudiments of music, basic concepts of music and basic guitar skills.

The emphasis will be on practical work, with theory in a secondary role. In year 10, the opportunity will be given to choose music as a year-long option, leading to NCEA courses in the senior school At the end of this course students should be able to:

  • Read and write notes on the treble clef
  • Read and write simple rhythmic patterns
  • Read and write simple tunes
  • Sing in a group
  • perform simple music
  • Listen to music in a focused way
  • Ientifying musical elements
  • Identify and compare some musical styles and genres
  • Learn guitar chords D, A7 and G, and use them to play simple songs
  • Explain how sound is produced and amplified in different types of instruments
  • Categorise musical instruments into families
